I'm honored to serve as both a chair and presenter at the Middle East Studies Association's 58th Annual Meeting, a privilege extended through my fellowship with MESA's Global Academy.
On November 12, I'll have the opportunity to contribute to the workshop titled Conflict, Power, and Knowledge: Studies from the Middle East and Diaspora. This session is especially close to my heart, as it explores the nuanced intersections of conflict, power, and the production of knowledge in the Middle East and among its diasporic communities. I’m excited to bring forward my research on a deeply concerning issue: the growing phenomenon of political interference in Turkish academia.
My presentation, Political Interference in Academia: The Impact of ‘Parachuting’ on Turkish Universities, delves into the practice of politically motivated appointments in Turkish universities, a practice colloquially known as “parachuting.” These appointments often disregard academic merit and undermine institutional autonomy, threatening the integrity of Turkish higher education.
As a MESA Global Academy Fellow, it’s truly rewarding to engage with others who are equally passionate about safeguarding academic integrity and fostering intellectual freedom. Exploring Political 'Parachuting' in Turkish Universities at the MESA Annual Meeting"
